OUR YACHTING COLLECTION

Real "memorabilia" that tell us the story of our Yachting ...

During his long career, Com. Alberto Bertacca has managed to perfectly collect and preserve a large number of tools and objects through which we can retrace the fundamental stages of boating in the last centuries.

since the Cleopatra time and throughout the Roman Empire, the concept of pleasure craft took shape, that is boats on which we sailed for pure entertainment and fun. Gradually the use of boats for this purpose took more and more foot and in this image is represented a "jaght" dating back to the early 1600's (it was modern), when the rich Dutch people showed off their wealth by sailing on these boats. This painting is exhibited at the Scheepvart museum in Amsterdam and highlights people on board who are having fun while sailing.
This beautiful print, which represents the port of Amsterdam, has a very important historical significance as it represents the birth of Yachting in the world. Amsterdam already in the seventeenth century had a marina with many pleasure boats, called "Jaght", to which many others were added in a few years. "Jaghting" was just born. In 1660 the English Crown Prince, in exile in Holland, returned to England and was crowned King with the name of Charles II, on that occasion he was given a Jaght named Mary. With this unity, the new king of England returned to his homeland and spread this new way of going by sea, transforming its name from Jaghting to Yachting.
Among other things, this year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Royal Cork Yachting Club considered in all respects the oldest Yacthing Club in the world, founded in 1720, an episode well described in the book in which the Com. Bertacca tells the  entire history of yachting, from its origins (1660) to the advent of boat shows and the mass production of pleasure boats (1960) which coincides with the end of the aristocratic period in this sector.
